Supergirl in the Multiverse: Earth-162

This universe is one of the quintessential pre-crisis universes because the concept is so quickly and easily recognizable. Earth-162, aptly named after the comic it debuted in Superman #162, tells the imaginary story of “The Amazing Story of Superman-Red and Superman-Blue”. This story tells presents an imaginary scenario where Superman, after being reprimanded by the Kandorian Council, sets out to preform a handful of tasks that he had so far neglected. His goal to achieve these tasks (enlarging Kandor, curing Kryptonite weakness, eliminating evil, etc.) is to use a brain enhancement machine that is powered by all colors of Kryptonite. Superman uses this machine, and while it does increase his intellect, it also splits him into twins a Superman-Red and a Superman-Blue. With heightened intellect and an extra set of hands, the Supermen quickly get to work on the list of tasks given by the Kandorians. After all evil is eradicated, the men of steel retire from their heroics and settle down. Superman Blue marries Lana Lang and Superman Red marries Lois Lane and the red family decides to spend their life on New Krypton so Kal can experience the Kryptonian life he never had.

When approaching this story through the lens of Supergirl, I was actually met with quite a few options. Supergirl does appear in this story, and early on when Superman is about to use the machine Supergirl tries to step in and mentions that she should be the one to use this dangerous machine not Superman. And I really like this idea of Supergirl being the one to be split instead of Superman, but I’ll save that for later, possibly an Earth-162-B. I also considered pursuing the daughters of Superman Red and Superman Blue, which appear on the cover to Superman 162, however they weren’t named and barely have a page showing them so there wasn’t a lot to work with. That left me to explore how Kara exists as shown in this story. Soon after Kandor is regrown and placed on a New Krypton and orbiting a red sun, Supergirl tells her cousin that she wishes to retire from heroics and return to life as a Kryptonian along with her own people. This is a rather charming ending for Supergirl and that’s what I’ve shown here this week.
